As the owner of Sun Valley Automotive Las Vegas auto repair, I realized that most of our customers do not have a solid understanding of what it means to be an ASE mechanic and why this certification is important to our shop.
These days, most everyone who has taken their vehicle in for repairs has seen the bright blue circular “ASE Certified” logo prominently displayed at automotive repair shops. But what exactly does ASE certification mean, and is it really a good indication of the quality and skill of the technicians who will be working on your vehicle? Find the answers below!
ASE certifications are awarded from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This non-profit organization, founded in 1972, is an independent agency which was created to help consumers distinguish between competent trained auto technicians and unskilled mechanics.
Technicians can only receive an ASE certification if they have passed ASE’s rigorous testing and certification process. And while ASE has had a huge impact on the automotive repair industry, it is not the sole certification agency.
Additional certifications for mechanics include certified factory training programs for dealerships, Tech-Net Certification courses and ongoing nationwide technician certification/education programs.
As a business owner and employer, I see an ASE certification as just a part of the whole picture. An ASE certification tells me that a technician has the drive to keep up with the fast paced automotive industry and that a technician has acquired the “book smarts” end of automotive repair.
Because ASE certification is good for 5 years, and has a 2 year work experience requirement, a current ASE mechanic certification also tells me that a technician is up-to-date on new automotive repair industry technologies and protocols.
While an ASE certification does have a 2 year work experience requirement, it is more of an indication of a technician’s automotive repair knowledge and not so much an evaluation of a technician’s hands-on skill – and this is something that most automotive repair customers do not realize.
ASE certification is a great thing to look for when you are searching for quality automotive repair services, but it shouldn’t be the only criteria used to evaluate a repair shop. It is just one part of the whole picture.
This is why, in addition to only staffing ASE certified technicians, Sun Valley Automotive Las Vegas auto repair also employs technicians that have additional certifications (for example, Tech-Net certifications) and of course can demonstrate the highest level of hands-on repair skills. So although an ASE certification is a great tool to use, it is not the only one for us because we have to be accountable for all of our services and repairs – and ultimately your trust.
Till Next Time,
Terry and the Crew at Sun Valley Automotive wishing you all the best!
